I’ve purchased a 240sx that has an automatic transmission, and a previous owner has installed a stupid 4th gear switch - the car won’t go into 4th gear unless you flip it. And then it stays in 4th until you flip it back... It’s pretty stupid to me. I think it was for drifting but I’m not interested. Anyone seen this and know how to get rid of it?

My initial thoughts are overdrive...but that won’t make it stay in 4th, it would just keep it out of 4th right? Automatics ¯\_()_/¯

Its a valve body control override. Probably directly activates the relays for the shift solenoids.
Edit: Kinda like what this guy did...

Why would you want an automatic for drifting? Sounds to me like the tranny was giving up going into 4th and this was a garage fix

Well...
...guess you’ll have to do an SR20DET manual swap then. Clearly that’s the only solution.

Maybe not so much “want”, but it’s probably what was available for cheap for the previous owner. Hold switches are fairly common in drifiting when using an automatic transmission (although they seem to be more common in bigger RWD sedans where automatics are more frequently found). You wouldn’t want the transmission to decide to shift in the middle of a drift, which could potentially upset the balance of the car.

Weird. I figured they’d hold out for manual versions but hey, the more you know

That is so impressively ghetto. I dig it.
Any idea how to remove this switch? Is it simply a spst switch between the relay (I hope so)? I have the car parked somewhere safe for a few days so I’ve got time to research before I go remove the stupid stuff from the previous owner(s) this weekend.

You really need a wiring diagram, it is clearly not going to be as simple as twisting those wires together.
